When choosing a school, there are many things we can optimize for: academics, character, spirituality, creativity, exposure, and many others.
But every school has a different center of gravity.
Some are built around academic excellence.
Some around spiritual formation.
Some around character and leadership.
I realized the same thing applies when building a team.
You can optimize for technical skills, speed, experience, or performance. All of them matter.
But for me, the center of gravity is character.
And character shows up in simple things: respect, discipline, and integrity.
How someone treats others.
Whether they keep their commitments.
Whether they do the right thing even when no one is watching.
How they respond under pressure.
Whether they take responsibility instead of finding excuses.
Skills can be developed. Knowledge can be learned. Processes can be improved.
But character becomes the foundation of how a team works together.
A strong team still needs high performance.
But I would rather build that performance on top of strong character than try to build character on top of performance.
